January

Wider learning activity:

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY and sexual harassment

National Threat Level

The threat to the UK (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) from terrorism is substantial. Substantial = an attack is likely.

Do you know what terror threats are likely in your local area?

Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day is observed on 27 January each year to commemorate the remembrance of Jews and others who suffered in the holocaust under the Nazis.  Other subsequent genocides include those in Rwanda, Cambodia and Darfur.

The significance of the 27th of January is that this date is the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945.

In January we want to raise awareness of being the target of sexual harassment, how it can happen and what you can do.

Harassment can come in the form of:

  • Verbal Harassment
  • Sexual Jokes
  • LGBT
  • Sexual Advances

Click here to learn more about the four types of abuse mentioned above. This link will also provides information relating to what to do if you are being harassed or you’re treated badly due to your reaction to being harassed.

Finally, please spend a few minutes watching the video below. This video talks about women’s fear of walking the streets on their own (amongst others).

Learner Activity 1

Carry out a quick search to locate “people who helped during the holocaust” and drill down into one specific person.  Try to understand their part during the holocaust, who they were, what did they do and why.

Prepare to have a short discussion with your LDC/Tutor around this person.

Learner Activity 2

Please try and identify one example of a case (local to you) of sexual harassment.

It will be worthwhile using a search engine and reviewing a recent court case.  Note the scenario, who was involved, what happened and what was the outcome.

Please also prepare to discuss this with your LDC/Tutor.
