Human rights day and modern slavery
Human Rights Day – 10 December
“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home —so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”– Eleanor Roosevelt
This year’s Human Rights Day theme relates to ‘Equality’ and Article 1 of the UDHR – “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” (Universal Declaration of Human Rights).

Modern Slavery
Modern slavery is the exploitation of people for personal or commercial gain. Modern slavery is everywhere, it is often just out of sight. It is known that people become entrapped making clothes, picking crops, serving food, factory working or working in houses as cleaners and nannies. It usually involves people being trafficked from others countries on a promise of a better life. However the reality when they arrive is very different.
Please spend a few minutes watching the following video. Although released in 2014, the message and information has not changed.
The following is a news report from 2020 detailing examples of people who had been trafficked.

As part of your activity (see below) you will be asked about any examples of modern slavery in your location (for example your county). Research for information and identify some examples that have happened within the past few years.
Learner Activity 1
Having reviewed the information on this page (and possibly carried out further research), prepare to have a quick discussion with your tutor/coach to clarify what exactly your understanding is of human rights.
Also, think about your rights as an individual right now and compare them to (for example) 5 years ago. Have they changed (laws, regulations etc)? If they have, do you agree with these changes? Should they be changed further?
Learner Activity 2
Please have a further short discussion about modern slavery -clarify your understanding.
Additionally, discuss with your coach/tutor the examples you researched about examples of modern slavery that have been discovered in and around where you live.
